that which contained us - no longer a home
Discrepancies in perception challenge our understanding of our own lives. I grew up in a predominantly Korean-American community in Los Angeles. I can’t make sense of all the events that led me to this moment, but I know that I’ve been pieced together by them. In all my works, I started with images from the places I called home. These places were integral to me, but time has complicated my relationship with the memories they hold. I built models of the house I grew up in with acrylic, dichroic film, and mirrors. I used light and layers to highlight and hide, to mirror just how complex our relationships with home can be. Sometimes, the information is there in sight. Sometimes, in pieces. And sometimes, barely there.
